Thank you barryf. If no news is good news then we have been getting a lot of good news lately. A good win last week by Sky Major who looked like he was getting closer to his old self after a slow / weak start to his time in W.A.

It's hopefully a case of no news is good news, Des.  Like you, we generally rely on the monthly newsletter unless there is a case of a definite forthcoming workout or race.

Trainer, Geoff Small, did suggest that a trial at Cambridge was being contemplated but was not emphatic on that point as there is no need to rush it at this stage and time will be his friend.  Another factor could be that the July/ early August weather has been foul with continual rain and cold temperatures- not good conditions to parade a young horse at the races.

I guess if they are looking at some quality 3 year old racing a few extra weeks of education and training will pay off in the medium/long term. At present most fields are filled by maidens and low grade horses.

Two weeks since the last trial ... no trial on the weekend ... no nomination ... no news ... ?????????? After a year and a half of paying for this horse we should be kept up to date by somebody.

Thanks for the report Barry.

Interestingly Postiano only finished 4th in Surfie's workout win last weekend, about 3 1/2 lengths behind him. Admittedly it sounds like the trial today was run at a very different tempo from last weeks workout where the overall time was more than 10 seconds slower.

There was some apprehension as to the speed of the track at Pukekohe this morning following some prolonged periods of rain but as it happened the track was presented in excellent order and fears were eased somewhat when Adrienne Matthews trotter, All Over the Stars, qualified in Race 2 in some 6 seconds under the qualifying time for 2500metres.

So, 3 pacers lined up in Surfie's trial for the 2050 metre journey.  Surfie showed his customary acceleration from the mobile barrier and lead the other 2 contestants clearly over the first 2 laps.  In the back straight the final time,Gotta Be Quicker dropped off which left Surfie still in front of Positano (Bettor's Delight- Kelly Maguire 2y/o gelding) as they straightened. But the Cooney/Hopkins youngster had a strong kick left and bettered Surfie in the last 50 metres to race away for a 2 1/2 lengths win in 2m35.9, with Surfie's time being 2m36.4, both well under the qualifying target of 2m42.2s.  Mile Rate was 2m02.4 , with last half in 59.1s., quarter 29.3s.  An impressive overall time by both youngsters.

Trainer, Geoff Small, said he was happy enough with the run and felt he may have pushed Surfie along a bit harder than desirable but knew the trailer would be ready and probably wanted to make sure of qualifying.

He indicated that he might look for a Saturday trial/workout for Surfie at Cambridge ( David Butcher to drive?) then consider a likely race programme thereafter.

There is a mention of Surfie's last workout performance in the HarnessXpress from earlier in the week.

Completing the programme was a win in the unqualified
pace by Some Change, an Auckland Trotting Club Syndicate
part-owned colt having his first public appearance for trainer
Geoff Small.
Small actually selected another colt for the syndicate at last
year’s Karaka yearling sale, a Rocknroll Hanover colt named
Change Pace that sold for $35,000.
He unfortunately died soon after the sale so Change Pace’s
co-breeder Rob Carr, who also happens to be the long-time
Syndicate Manager of the ATC Syndicates, arranged for them
to take on Some Change as a replacement.
He went through the same sale but was a buy back by Carr
and fellow breeder Don Kirkbride, who have both retained a
share in the colt.
In the hands of Small, the son of Somebeachsomewhere
trailed the Tony Herlihy-trained and driven Lady Mach, before
working clear down the straight and winning a close finish.
The times weren’t great – understandable given the
conditions and the fact this was every horse’s first public
appearance - but he looks like a horse of considerable quality
and his large ownership group, most of which were present
at Franklin Park on Saturday, look like having a lot of fun.

Good luck at the qualifying trials this morning Surfie!

Surfie made it 2 from 2 at the workouts this morning.

He came out off the gate well again and dropped straight down into the trail. They raced in Indian file most of the way until halfway around the final bend when Some Change came up outside the leader and hit the front at the top of the straight, going on to win by a small margin as the leader fought back on the inside.
I didn't catch the time for the race but Geoff was pleased with the run and expects he shouldn't have any issues qualifying at the trials next weekend.Smile

Yes he certainly looks to have some ability. The hanging head should be relatively easy to fix with blinkers or sliding blinds as a first option, or even as a more robust option with the use of a fixed boring pole to hold the head straight.

The replay shows Some Change racing with his head turned out but he looked good when he moved away before the turn. The comments from the trainer, as reported in Rob Carr's email, were pleasing to hear and it appears all is positive at the moment. Thank you barryf for your earlier report. Has anyone considered asking Barry Purdon to do a guest report on the syndicate horses that he trains exclusively for this blogsite? This is blog number 600 so well done everybody.

Thanks for the feedback on today's workout barryf.

I liked what I saw of Surfie at the meet the horses morning last year, so I have been optimistic about his future since then.

Good first official outing by Some Change which saw him effect a quick beginning from the middle of the 3 runners and set a steady tempo , quickening over the last lap to hold on by half a length.

His early acceleration was impressive and trainer/driver Geoff Small took hold to allow the others to catch up so that bodes well for his keenness from the mobile.  Overall time was 2m44.2 for the 2050 metres, mile rate 2m.08.9 with final sectionals in 60.2s and 28.9 seconds.

With a compact and athletic physique, plus a good temperament and racing manners, "Surfie" looks like a racehorse so  expect some good times with him.

I did not make it back to the stables (busy warming up with hot coffee) but Barbara James did and she understood he will be returning to the workouts next opportunity with a qualifying trial soon after.
